Charging while driving

Charging while driving

A new methodology for dynamic charging of electric vehicles while driving.

The expansion of electric mobility is hampered by the limited range of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), which makes long-distance travel, particularly on motorways, difficult. To solve this critical issue, research and industry are developing innovative solutions, among which recharging while driving stands out. This technology involves installing inductive coils under the road pavement that transfer energy to moving vehicles using electromagnetic fields. This approach, known as Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer (DWPT), eliminates the need to stop for recharging, extending the electric vehicles’ runtime continuously and smoothly.
Despite its great potential, the implementation of DWPT systems presents significant challenges, such as high installation and maintenance costs, and the lack of hard data on the concrete impact of such infrastructures for users. To address these issues, the Charging While Driving research project developed an innovative methodology using an algorithm based on real traffic data.

Currently, the R&D team is carrying out studies in collaboration with the University of Bologna, aimed at identifying integration technologies with the motorway pavement.

The algorithm simulates the flow of electric vehicles along specific motorway sections, modelling the layout of the DWPT infrastructure and estimating potential benefits. The aim is to determine how many users could travel long distances without stopping to recharge, thus improving the driving experience and encouraging the adoption of e-mobility.

This technology represents a step forward in the creation of intelligent and sustainable road infrastructure, helping to reduce environmental impact and support the transition to zero-emission mobility on a motorway scale.
