A dynamic system for monitoring and preventing dangerous situations
The advanced monitoring system for hazardous goods transport uses V2X (vehicle-to-everything) technology to ensure safety and reduce risks along the way. Thanks to this technology, the system monitors vehicles carrying hazardous materials in real time and warns drivers of any dangerous situations, such as the presence of other vehicles with hazardous goods nearby or anomalous situations along the road.
The C-ITS messages used in the system (Cooperative Awareness Messages – CAM and Infrastructure-to-Vehicle Information Messages – IVIM) have been specially enriched with additional information compared to the standards, allowing the collection of critical data such as the class and quantity of goods transported, the Kemler number, the UN code, the position, the speed and the destination of the vehicle. This information makes it possible to better monitor risks and improve communication between vehicles and with infrastructure.
The system sends IVIM messages to notify nearby vehicles in real time of proximity hazards. It also maintains continuous communication with the Traffic Control Centre, which constantly monitors traffic and collects data to prevent accidents.
The monitoring of hazardous goods vehicles is an essential activity for risk management at preventive and protective levels. This system was successfully tested on over 800 km of Italian motorways, with the support of vehicles equipped with V2X devices. During the tests, approximately 215,000 CAM messages and 80,000 IVIM messages were exchanged, collecting crucial data to optimise security management.
The adoption of this technology contributes to safer and more dynamic mobility, supporting real-time management that improves road safety and reduces environmental risks. The implementation of advanced C-ITS solutions marks an important step towards safer and more efficient management of hazardous goods transport.
